the part about the press reminded me of the song 'dirty laundry' by don henley. very accurate.
so once again i believe this might explain something i've consistently been confused about with people. i like to question things on both sides (maybe to death, and i realize that), before i ever fully come to a conclusion when i'm presented with information about anything. "isn't what my friend did to me awful?" "well, did you do something to upset her? what was going on?" or, "how about this new political candidate, he sucks right?" "i haven't researched up on him yet. i need to listen to some of his speeches and read back on his consistency before i come to a decision." "but he's for XYZ? how can you not hate him?"
i have never understood why people get so upset about this. i haven't heard it explained like this and framing it as react vs. respond makes a lot of sense.
do you think reacting would be more common than responding towards a person oblivious of a lot of social cues? i'm also wondering why responding pisses people who have a tendency to react off so much. is it because they want you to react with them?
So whatever mal-adjustments and shortcomings of my life, since I clearly 'react', I am certainly NT, not wired in another way.
By learning from you and studying those around me, I can still grow and change in a positive way. I see others try to take advantage by causing in a emotional state when logical protects me: where emotion is there for me to control and overcome.
Maybe there are other people doing this Athena, but as far as I can tell you are the only one. I am truly in your debt on a pretty deep level.
Just before seeing this I watched a video of an autistic woman being arrested after causing an incident with law enforcement entirely because she was oblivious to any social cues. At no point did she do anything but react in such a way that her bad situation was made much worse.
I'm a strong believer that there's usually some truth on both sides of an issue, so I stay impartial in a lot of situations, and yes, some people are angered by this. I just hate the 'Us vs Them' mentality.
"It is a matter of making it a habit of allowing the emotion to pass without giving it power and allowing your logic to take over and evaluating things as they are, not how your limbic system tells you they are."
That's a core Buddhist concept, Athena, and well said.
This article also made me think of Kevin Spacey, and his being cleared of all charges in two trials. Now, I have no doubt that Spacey is a difficult man. He had a horrific childhood according to his brother. He must have made a lot of enemies. Plus, there are always those wanting to jump on the bandwagon for money. But, before his trials, he was fired from House of Cards. He was dropped from projects he was contracted to perform in. There was a knee jerk reaction against him. Despite two courts finding him innocent, it will be a daunting task to recover his career, if that's even possible. Personally, I think that he's one of the greatest actors alive, so this is probably a great loss over nothing, or very little.
I'll be watching K-PAX, which I haven't seen, and having a Spacey film fest. He is a Master in his craft. He might be a difficult person, but artists generally are, especially the gifted ones. He's a one-off and irreplaceable. I can't picture anyone else in most of the roles I've seen him in.
Hopefully, with his court cases resulting in a declaration of innocence for both, we can begin to address the fallacies of always assuming the victim is telling the truth (sometimes at the cost of the principle of innocent until proven guilty), considering that the victim(s) might include grifters or those who are disgruntled.
If you see this wonderful film, hope you post back your reaction. It is one of those you can watch numerous times and enjoy. If it moves too slow, please call me out and tell me!! haha
For you, did OJ's trial result make a difference in your preception of him?
He was "not guilty" though, for most people, not factually innocent.
The jury did not make a finding, which they had the option, of "we find him factually innocent". Dammit, if only I had been on his jury! Was that trial like months long? After all that, as a juror I would have pressed for a declaration of "found innocent".
We both know there are NOT many of me: Kevin Spacey didn't have "me" either. The jury failed in their biggest duty: to protect his reputation.
Without changing the subject, and in respect to Athena's work, put this in the context of Trump's trials!!
What if the jury returns from deliberations with "findings"?
Rare enough, but completely legal AND completely binding.
"we find this is a witch hunt and that the case should never have been brought"
It is easy enough to imagine the other side of that and frankly? A lot more fun!!
I remember where I was the day OJ's verdict was read - at a liquor store whereย it was on TV. Everyoneย knows he did it. I guess it was karma's turn for justice...The same will likely be true with Trump. I don't think he'll ever do time.
In Keven Spacey's case, I know that where there's smoke there's probably fire. However, with some 40 odd accusers, some of them anonymous, and in the jurisdictions of two countries, he was found innocent of ALL charges. Maybe he made unwanted advances,ย or behaved badly when drunk. That happens all of the time. As long as the person involved is not a minor, that isn't criminal. I get that Spacey had all of the power, but he is not the Harvey Weinstein that he was being made out to be.ย
So, justice doesn't alwaysย prevail. For Spacey, maybe it has. Have a great one yourself!!ย
After 58 years, I think I have, finally, accomplished responding instead of reacting. This may require my stepping back for a few minutes to a few days.
The people in my life are, finally, on board with allowing this time, instead of wanting to resolve the issue RIGHT NOW. If I can't step back, it's practically guaranteed that the end result is not going to be what anyone wants, ever.
I can't tell you how very much I appreciate and enjoy your writing. I've learned so very much. Thank you for every single word.
Is it bad to comment on this post just because I like you Athena?
I have realised with twitters revenue sharing leading to a kind of ultra narcissistic orgy of falsity, that gives me a literal headache that this has highlighted something I have often thought. That a lot of content creators are just in it for the money. That's why you can't have a discussion in their comment sections because they only want agreement or for you to GTFO.
One would think that Elon is some sort of Q linked agent sent to collapse the matrix of social control!
You're not about the money though! You are truly writing for the message in my belief. You have something to say. What you say also leads to self knowledge for a lot of us and that is a true service!
On the subject of the article it is interesting because I suppose you are trying to address neurotypicals and have them have better judgement?
Ultra weirdly, I have just reread the article for the third time, and what I just said about twitter is very in line with the subject matter, if a little indirectly.
In general though I have close to zero ability to process these kinds of emotions so I don't have much to say. I suppose when something interests me a little. Like the fantastically interesting Lauren Southern/ Rollo and Brittany drama, then I do opine and I know from the very beginning I will be wrong, and will continue to be wrong. Because that's just how those things are. You don't get the real information. I am probably even wrong now.
I have about as much emotional connection to those subjects as I do to twitter which I will be trying very much to avoid.
I wrote about this one because it was requested. It certainly is something that I have observed in in neurotypicals, but it is normal to me that people are like this. Most often people are perplexed by my lack of emotional reaction to things, even if they know how I am. It seems to me that people would be a lot happier if they allowed logic to inform a response instead of reacting to partial or incorrect information.
hey. Good to see you: Thanks for asking. Nice to be asked--
I think so, yes. But I am very contented of moving slowly.
Some factors I didn't plan on, but have played a big role: My father died recently. Until your parents are dead, it is hard to close the chapter on them, even if they are just holding on.
My mom, her sister and my two sisters were in a horrific accident and all were hospitalized and rehabbed for at least one month each.
These things resulted in less b*llshit and more direct sort of communication that have helped me alot. Honest of myself is more important, than anything: Throwing off the burdens and roles imposed by others is still helpful.
Thanks again for asking. What about you? How is your progress coming along? Please tell me something really meaningful happening.
Ouch, well those were two experiences that will give you a lot of insight into your capacity for grief and shock and such.
Lol, nothing massively meaningful is happening for me. When illness is involved and it is a slow improvement, weeks go by and not much happens. The question as it relates to this subject matter of why I have not shown empathy at times, in a kind of disturbing manifestation is still not solved, neither is there any particular clarity on what my new emotional state is now I am in a very different place medically.
Because the 'lack of empathy' is not causing any particular problems right at this moment literally no one cares about it. I remind myself when I talk in this area, and accidentally reveal a kind of inner ruthlessness that upsets people (I drunk a bit of alcohol the other day!) of guys that believe they are hundreds of times more ruthless than they are but are just deluded and wonder if that is me.
I have discovered some things personally about my medication and its deleterious effects, but this would probably not be suitable for here as it would fall under the "conspiracy" category.
Thanks for your kind post and good words. I hope you are having a wonderful and productive weekend!
Medical stuff and illness is for sure the most difficult. Yes, extremely slow to heal, to recover. It appears unless a person has been very sick and grievously ill, they (we) don't realize how difficult sickness is to endure.
The animal nature of man has no room, no capactity, for another's sickness. We may as well be chicken, jumping over our dead friends to get their foods (ever seen chicken do that?) The more we champion our animal nature, the less we can appreciate sickness in others.
Even me, seeing these things, I don't appreciate or express gratitude of the simple things: like walking my dog every day, using my miracle self propulsion system (legs)
Ruthless? I'm not sure about this one. But, if you like, I know I would enjoy the details: Spill!! What did you say, in what circumstances, that you upset others?
I experienced a period in my life I call "Global Rage". I had to work through that over a period of years. I had to find ways to prevent myself from utilizing violence to accomplish my goals. That was a very difficult time for me and it was hard to let go of violence as a tool.
As to medicine? And conspriacy? I trust you to make those decisions. It is clear about 75% of the debilitive disease in USA is caused by diet.
With very little money, ANYONE can know, with certainty, far more than I do about this topic.
It does appear, though I don't know how it may impact you, the same people who own the food products industry (that cause degenerative disease), also own the insurance industry which funds the "treatment", not cure, of these diseases.
You really don't need a conspiracy so much as the patience to read annual reports. It seems like this is all published info.
Not only is it available!! hahaha. It could be collected and presented in news outlets- except!! "News" is now profit centers. They depend on the advertising of those who sell the food products in the first place!! haha.
This is the same medication I use. I have not shared what the disability is previously for many reasons but one is that people have the wrong idea about it since it comes in different levels of severity. But, I was unable to do bloodsugars for at least three years due to nuropathy in my fingers:
With these nanites/ hydrogel in the injections I consider myself CTD. I'm not even sure Ivermectin is legal in the UK; and I don't have a job so... I'm going to be putting some extra energy into getting myself right with my Creator.
I still get bloodsugar problems but they are far, far, far less intense than before. But when they go up really high I get all these emotions, such as social fears. That don't seem to exist in my natural state of normal bloodsugars. These problems are proven to mess up the grey matter in the brain.
The 'ruthlessness' was something I said that was pretty normal I thought. I went round a friends and as part of our conversation just said that if there were no law and order issue, I would be comfortable going in my last workplace and shooting everyone there. Not gonna happen in real life of course. Just the kind of stupid thing you say when you drink (I have not drunk in about a decade). It made them uncomfortable nonetheless.
Maybe I have pussy friends or maybe it's the kind of statement that needs to be "masked".
Yes! That's pretty much it. I process emotions differently. Most of the times I can't identify them properly so I use my body reactions to have an idea of what I'm feeling. That allows me to see my own emotional reactions from a third perspectives, so 99% of the times I'm always aware that there might be something going on inside of me but all I do is just let it be. During a confrontation, for example, I can identify I'm having an internal reaction to the situation but somehow I don't react to it emotionally. I'm always calm and analysing what's going on and trying to find the best way to end the confrontation. I observe people being angry quite easily (specially my friends when we're playing overwatch and lose the match. Losing the match never really bothered me but it beats me how they get so angry over a silly defeat) and always wonder if they're aware of what's going on and know that it won't take them anywhere. Depending on the situation, it'll escalate even more.
My mom is also a very reactive person and reacts to things that have literally no effects on our lives. And she's always telling that I should be more "reactive" to the things around me, especially danger or suspicious people. Like you said in your recent podcast, I get alert when I see someone suspicious but it doesn't lead me to irrational fear. I will be observing the person to see how much of a threat they really are. I usually don't go spiraling down my emotions without even understanding what's ACTUALLY going on
In defense somewhat of "reacting", sometimes you don't have to hear some long drawn out explanation of an issue before you understand the speaker's position and point of view. When that point of view or intention demonstrates ignorance, hate or negative provocation, then what is the point of carefully analyzing each word spoken before responding. it's a waste of time and energy and gives respect and dignity to the person/their comments that are undeserved. You just know when you know that that's the case.
I have found that people will shut other people down from discussion because they do not want to hear a differing opinion and will cloak that refusal to hear a differing opinion by calling it hateful, ignorance, or an "attack", when in reality, the other person simply does not agree with them.
I can understand when you are dealing with a toxic person, but many times the toxic person is the one refusing to hear anything that makes them slightly uncomfortable emotionally.
Often, both sides end up labeling the other as "haters", along with various other epithets, such as the overused term "racist". There are certain individuals with whom you can't engage in an open-minded, intelligent discussion, which includes considering opinions and ideas that differ from one's own.
I agree. Sometimes, you have to abruptly cut someone off, especially if it involves hateful provocation. I have a family member who picks the worst times to start some hateful conversation about another family member, like at a luncheon somewhere fancy that's supposed to be quiet, subdued and dignified. And, she is persistent, and sometimes loud. It's just a mood or hormonal thing, but I have to say, "I'm not listening to this", or "I'm not here to argue", or "Change the subject". It has to be said harshly, too. I've even told her that she's embarrassing herself. It's very hard to get her to stop when these moods hit her, but she's apologetic about it later, so I accept that these things are sometimes not within her control, although they should be.
If you are aware that the person is a toxic individual and they have a habit of starting fights and insulting people, it is a logical decision to not listen to them. You are responding to that person using their past actions as the measuring stick. The best predictor of future behavior is past relevant behavior.
Different media outlets use reporting that makes it easier to do one or the other - responding or reacting - also. Possibly none are just one or the other.
Thank you for this one Athena. And if someone who's always kind of had anger management issues, there are a lot of instances where I wish that I would have taken a step back and thought about the situation before just going with my gut reaction which produced an extremely negative result for everyone involved. And I really love the analogy of bunnicula.
Hi Athena, great article! There's a saying I always try and refer to before reacting, and that is 'Just because you think it, doesn't make it true'. My imagination can run wild and will show me some really vivid stories! I have to pause and gain more information. Am interested to know your thoughts on the approaching New world order, and cashless, 15 minute societies? It seems, very hard times are coming due to Bill Gates, Obama and the 13 bloodlines that run this world. Thoughts? X
I am familiar with fifteen minute cities and find it fascinating that the people that live in the highest pollution areas are trying to make laws regarding the people that live a much cleaner life.
15 Minute Cities put me in mind of concentration camps. They are being sold with notions of drone delivery of all necessities and no income or way to leave should anyone have any aspiration to do so. the next step would logically be aerosolized fentanyl in the AC system to be followed by sealing entire blocks up to create mausoleums for the inhabitants who've been deemed redundant
I am guessing that they intend for many of the people in fifteen minute cities to spend a great deal of their time in a virtual space and not reality. Not a fun idea in my estimation.
Unfortunately many kinds of pollution travel. If one is considering CO2 a pollutant, or even particulates, the point of origin matters not at all or just somewhat (depending upon particle size etc.) If you're talking about tossing apple cores onto lawns, well that I can see being truly local.
An addition after writing the first part; there seem to be some very different discussions and memes about "15 minute cities". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/15-minute_city Youch.
True. Seems they are confining us, so they get to roam the earth without being mobbed. They are using climate change to trick us into this, more lock downs are coming. What are your thoughts on losing cash? Can you see the inevitable control that will ensue? Especially digital currency expiring, thus us being forced to spend it and never accumulating wealth.
I had to quit facebook a few years ago because I kept getting articles showing up in my feed that would enrage me. Do I like thought out intellectual discussions? Yes I do, but click bait articles you'll find on most social media websites are like gambling. You're better off not playing and the only winner is the house or ad company in this case.
Even worse than that is most people do not even read the articles prior to reacting to them. The sites putting them out know this, and intentionally title them something that more often than not, if you read the article, is actually proven by their own writing to be inaccurate. They title them like that on purpose to emotionally manipulate people.
What's even worse is the fact that they track your data and specifically give you articles that tailor to you. In my case, I ended up with a lot of parenting articles, not because I'm a parent, but because I was dealing with my own trauma with how I was raised. Reading a parenting article, and then reading a comment like "I was spanked as a kid, and it taught me respect!" was not exactly helping. I went into the settings for my account and there was an option to remove certain subjects from facebooks algorithm. I had to remove the 'parenting and family' subject multiple times in order for it to be permanent.
Social media can legitimately be a drain on one's mental health. I can guarantee there are thousands if not millions of people who; have eating disorders being recommended dieting articles, depressed people being recommended extremist political articles, ignorant people being recommended conspiracy theory articles.
It is invasive and predatory. The subject of dystopian novels. Yet instead of a government trying to control its citizens, it's big corporations using it to make money.
the part about the press reminded me of the song 'dirty laundry' by don henley. very accurate.

good post๐๐ผ
I do the same thing, playing devil's advocate. It can upset some people because it makes them feel unheard or worse, attacked.
Athena, this is one of your top posts ever: I'm really into it and have a ways to go.
Thank you again for your provocative and useful work.
Is it fair to say a person who reacts, as you present, is NOT a psychopath?
Unless they are putting on a performance for the sake of the mask, no, they wouldn't be a psychopath.
So whatever mal-adjustments and shortcomings of my life, since I clearly 'react', I am certainly NT, not wired in another way.

Just before seeing this I watched a video of an autistic woman being arrested after causing an incident with law enforcement entirely because she was oblivious to any social cues. At no point did she do anything but react in such a way that her bad situation was made much worse.
i've seen that happen a lot. it is why the spectrum is so vast, i think; some of us respond initially, and some of us react initially.
This gives me pause! Thanks!!

Indeed, that is a good example
I loved him in KPax. We will all remember this performance when we "know" humans are designed by aliens. Hehehe
He's an awesome actor, and I hope that he makes a the comeback he deserves.
Did you like him in KPax?
Imagine anyone other than him in All the Usual Suspects. I didn't know him as an actor when I saw the first time. Truly movie magic.
Both of these I enjoy with my children as educational films: Film making and lessons on human behavior.

But, I was unable to do bloodsugars for at least three years due to nuropathy in my fingers:
https://expose-news.com/2023/08/04/qdots-in-long-acting-insulin-are-assembling/
I usually don't go spiraling down my emotions without even understanding what's ACTUALLY going on
I shall take this as a sign to start daily meditation practice, Ty Athena.
That's a good plan
So true
Media outlets depend on creating a reaction. Manufactured outrage is where the money is, unfortunately.
Yes, very true
Athena!!! You rock GF!! I guess I knew you might think this, but so good to see you post!!
Thank you for this one Athena. And if someone who's always kind of had anger management issues, there are a lot of instances where I wish that I would have taken a step back and thought about the situation before just going with my gut reaction which produced an extremely negative result for everyone involved. And I really love the analogy of bunnicula.
Awesome.
I do not think a central digital currency is a good idea.
Would you consider doing a post on this?
