I don't know the people but the circumstances ring true for a lot of families. It's amazing what a mess people can cause.

I'm looking forward to the conclusion

It is indeed. It is going to take me a bit to get through this one. It is more of a mess than you can imagine, and parts of it are still unfolding

Can you provide some information about how you came to take on this project? Maybe you wrote about it previously and I missed it…

Are these people you encountered somehow?

They are people that I know well

Omg do we have to wait a whole week?!!

Unfortunately, because each part requires me to confer with several people to be sure I get everything accurate.

I would hazard a guess from similar stories that the more insidious reason was something like, that she didn't want to acknowledge Jess's virtue. It can't be brought after all and it reduces her own perceived superiority to tattered rags. I assume Jess assumes the best of others and has a reflexive kindness to her that Joan does not.

I have heard it said before that a lot of people are not able to adapt to changes in status. We used to live in a large clans where someones status is fixed throughout their lives. Nowadays where some low status teen can shoot off into the stratosphere because they got access to a coding platform and access to online philosophy or something. People simply can't adapt to this change. They want the 'low status teen' to still be below them. To feel as though they are above someone and hence have value. But he's not.

It would be nice if it was something as benign as that, but no, it truly is insidious.

I’m not sure about that. Nomadic hunter gatherers societies tend to be egalitarian in nature. They will assassinate any individual who tries to lord over them.

Hierarchy doesn’t really start until people started living in permanent settlements, which allows for the accumulation of property.

Cliff-hanger not too dissimilar from watching information unfold about someone you thought you knew.

Also trying to imagine something more insidious than Jess's father attempting to be inappropriate with his daughter

Thank you for the share. Good start! I’m wondering whether or not Aunt Joan certain has strong narcissistic traits at least! Looking forward to reading more.

A good question, to which I do not know the answer. What I can say is she is simply a mean woman
