I'm not eating. I'm Wednesday and have been just released from ICU. No lie.

Medical professionals couldn't figure out exactly what went on. They are incompetent at best.

Here's the making of a novel ~ The discharge doc asked me what I thought had caused my condition.

Huh.

I just gave her my INTJ death stare. Eventually mumbled "I'm not being paid to self diagnose. "

It sucks when they can't figure out what is going on, and I hope that you know soon so you can handle it to the best of your ability. It shouldn't be your responsibility to figure out, but unfortunately that doesn't matter.

One would like to trust accredited professionals. I don't.

Everyone has to earn my trust; additionally, anyone I pay works for me.

I'll figure it out, almost have everything aligned. Very glad for the many classes taken in anatomy, physiology, histology etc.

The strangest question was asked by the admitting nurse while I was still in the ED. She asked, "Do you consider yourself smart?"

(Paraphrasing. )

"Smarter than most everyone", was my reply. Couldn't mask a thing due to fentanyl

No reason to mask the truth when it's your life and health in the balance. MDs often think themselves better than, when often they are lacking in so many areas, harming patients while looking for horses, not zebras.

Am still quite ill.

I can relate, EveSwan. I went through the same thing-- spent lots of time and money on lab tests (that came back off the charts) and doctors (urgent care, primary care, specialist) visits to no avail. One doctor said he was flummoxed! Hope all turns out okay for you. After a lengthy period, I am somewhat back to normal, I think, and my body seems to be reviving itself. I could have just stayed home and saved money and effort.

Hey there, thank you for supporting me. It's been two weeks since the issue began and am still recovering .

To share a bit, the ct showed my cecum - where the large intestine joins the small intestines; where the appendix is, in my upper right abdominal quadrant. (It's supposed to be in the lower right quadrant. )

Considering my upper right abdominal quadrant was very much at issue.... did any medical professional think, "geez how did her ascending colon flip upwards? THAT COULD CAUSE HER ISSUE. "

No.

Not one, including the radiologist who had 3-4 prior abdominal ct scans to reference. In each, my ascending colon was in its correct anatomical position.

Gets more unbelievable.

Called the GI place. The guy I've seen in the past said it's a "congenital defect." Uh, no.

Have an appointment with him on Thursday...

You can feel sorry for him.

I certainly don't.

Good lord, and they spent how much time in medical school?

The appointment is tomorrow.

Have my criteria ( critical medical data; especially what I expect from this appointment) ready.

Emotions don't play a part.

In my opinion (which I acknowledge was unasked for, and thus am apologizing to you in advance) the only way that this could've possibly been improved upon would be if you had answered the discharge doc with a brief burst of concentrated flatulence as you made your exit.

With the money that those folks make for their expertise, you'd think they could've done better for you.

Expand full comment

I would have but there wasn't anything to flatulate.

I had the feeling that this would be the case. Ah, well... in a perfect world that doc wouldn't have deserved it :-)

Happy Thanksgiving Athena!

Happy Thanksgiving fair readers!

From a Brit who doesn’t celebrate but used to and sorely misses your pumpkin pie!

Expand full comment

It isn't too difficult to make. You can even make the pumpkin mixture yourself if you have sugar pumpkins. Just take off the rind, cut it into pieces, just cover with water, and simmer. It should bubble, not boil, while you stir often. Then, figure out your spice mix, make your crust, and bake a pie. Lard works best for the crust, but I know a lot of people shy away from that now. You can have an incredible pie that you make start to finish and other people will wonder how it is so tasty.

Expand full comment

Do you know, I might just try that! Honestly, I am culinarily challenged, but what have I got to lose by having a go? Also, since writing about pumpkin pie, I can’t seem to stop craving it!

Thank you for the tips.

Noticed the imagery!... . We watched most of the reboot of Wednesday Addams on Netflix while recovering from feasting this weekend. https://www.netflix.com/title/81231974

One of Wednesday's classmates does call her a "psychopath" in one episode. The actress uses pretty flat affect, and it's possibly the writers read a bit about psychopathy, but it's not really based upon that; it's perhaps more about being a different kid, various kinds of "different".

The Yorkshire pudding decided to be a butt head, and not rise, even when the dough was prepared perfectly. After five attempts, and no rising I decided that the traditional recipe was worthless, so I found a different recipe. While preheating the pan, the power went out because the breaker tripped. Of course, when it came back on I forgot to reset the oven temperature, so I put attempt number five into an oven that was one hundred degrees below optimal temp. I fixed it, but was certain that it wouldn't rise. It did, and turned out beautifully, so if you are looking for a Yorkshire pudding recipe, use Alton Brown's. It works even when you fuck it up.

Other than that, it was awesome.

It might be, but the prime rib might have gotten the upper hand, beaten me to a pulp, and made me write drivel. We shall see.
