I recently watched a YouTube video that debunked the Heath Ledger version of the Joker as being a psychopath. The video pointed out that there are 3 traits that all definitions agree on in psychopaths. No empathy, exploitative behavior and egocentrism. What I noticed is that the video being reviewed didn’t even address those traits.

Psychopath is just fun to say I guess. Oddly enough to all appearances Diddy seemed to hit all three but really most all neurotypical people will be inclined to ignore empathy, exploit others and be self centered if there are no consequences

Agreed. It isn't just what is missing that defines psychopathy, it is also what's present that wouldn't be in a psychopath.

Thanks, Athena. Laughed a lot with you expressing irony and impatience.

Thank you for this post. Your writing is always sobering. Sadly, many YouTubers use the same vocabulary as her and talk as if they know more than they do.

I recently learned the word "parasocial relationships."

We believe we know celebrities. People love and defend them like crazy and act offended if you do not care for that celebrity. I am guilty of this, too. It is odd, and I have to ask why.

Why are celebrities so special that I waste time learning about them?

They have some hold on American culture.

Despite being dead since 1962, Marilyn Monroe and all her friends and enemies are probably dead. People are still making movies about her and speculating about her possible affairs with the Kennedys.

What intrigues to look back into the past and speculate about scandalous relationships?

I wish humans could get rid of self-projection.

It makes you wonder how much of what we think, believe, or observe about others is the truth.

Thank you for this.

A lot of what people think of when it comes to others is drawn based on projections. They think they know the person because they identify something in them that they relate to, so they assign their own reasoning to that action, which makes them feel like they know them. It isn't that they do at tall, it's just assumption. This is also, by the way, how people are so easily led by rumors and emotional appeals when it comes to celebrities.

It's interesting to me, the level of investment that people have in celebrities, means that when that illusion is shattered, they feel betrayed by the person. That is so odd in my estimation. How can anyone feel betrayed by someone that they do not know and could never know. They made no agreements with the fan that have been violated, and the persona that they present was always false. I do not understand the people that think otherwise.

I suppose it is disappointing if the celebrity is a religious figure.

I wonder how often I am wrong about people.

It's best not worry.

I know some people who pride themselves on being an excellent judge of character.

Apparently to some, if their pet doesn't like you then you must be an awful human being.

The funny thing about that is that cats tend to love people that are allergic to them. This is actually due to the language of cats, and how humans react to things they want to avoid. Humans will see something that they don't wish to deal with, or have a hard time with, and they will look away.

In cat language, if you are a stranger, and you avoid their gaze, they see that as ceding territory space to them. They, at first, see you as a challenge, but when you look away, they see you as surrendering. This is, to them, a very endearing thing, and it tends to make them accept you and like you. It makes them want to be around you, which is the opposite of what someone with allergies is going to want.

That said, there is something to the instincts of animals. I have seen the reaction from our dog to someone that made it very clear the person was someone to avoid.

Oh my, my housemate's cat does this. I'm not the biggest fan of cats so I try my best to avoid it but I cannot for the life of me get that creature out of my room. The other day it decided to bring a lovely dead rat and leave it on my bed.

That cat likes you and considers you someone worthy of hunting for.

Expand full comment

I appreciate it but unfortunately, it is not reciprocal. Maybe I'll have to learn to like cats.

Expand full comment

Ha. My cat used to do the same thing, bringing me decapitated mice and birds. His hunting skills worked out in my favour when there was a mouse scurrying about the house; he caught that thing like it was nothing. I carried him outside and had to convince him to drop it. He did so, albeit reluctantly.

Cat behaviour is interesting. I enjoy the murderous little creatures a great deal. I understand their need for boundaries and independence and it doesn't upset me, as I've seen it do others (especially those who compare cats to dogs and expect them to behave in the same way, that works out as well as one would expect).

Without consciously noticing what in particular it is about my cat's body language, I always know exactly when I can and cannot pet him. At certain times, as soon as my hand reaches out and before anything has happened, something tells me to retract it if I'd rather not be swatted at. He is quite laid back and affectionate with me overall, he knows I respect when he doesn't want to be touched. Sometimes I do not want to be petting him either.

I think the same seems to apply to humans. I find it fascinating that we can grow to become so familiar with how the beings around us are feeling and are likely to react to something. So much so that we can sense it before we consciously notice the cues that give it away.

I always find it odd that people think that cats should remotely resemble dogs in their behavior. Totally different creature and totally different thinking.

Maybe I'll get my kitten's attention by acting like that.

Sounds to me like Diddy is quite the unpleasant sort of person.

I would agree with that assessment

Expand full comment

I don't think people especially the tiktok group has any comprehension that anybody can be bad or good depending on the circumstances. What you may have doesnt seem to make a difference. Based on her ideas psychopaths would be 100% of the prison population instead of possibly 25%. She has a soapbox to spew off of but no idea of how to use it. To be that desperate for validation and approval is unhealthy at best.

Expand full comment

Agreed.

Also, the number of psychopaths that interact with the legal system is between ten and thirteen percent, and that with overly broad parameters and overassessment of psychopathy.

Expand full comment

For darn sure.

Unfortunately, of(almost) every psychopathy researchs I've checked, are done in prisons or similar places, which is selective-sample i believe.

It's difficult to understand how you experience pleasure or liking something without there being an emotional attachment

Expand full comment

Hmm, maybe something I should write about

Expand full comment

Definitely yes!! I think this is something that NT's find baffling about psychopaths. As in "how is it possible for someone to experience pleasure or liking something when there is no emotional component?"

Expand full comment

I think that there has to be some sort of emotional component to it, as I still like them, I enjoy having them, so I think it likely relates to self-focus. What I don't have is the bond that other people would. I will write about it.

Thanks! I am intrigued about how you would characterize the difference, as you perceive it. Ie, with bond / without bond.

I’m late to this conversation, but I must emphatically state that Sean Combs is no psychopath. He’s utterly devoid of musical talent—he can’t sing, rap, dance, or play an instrument—making him the ultimate poseur and wannabe. Instead, he profited off the genuine talent of others, exploiting and manipulating them to take credit for their work. He indulged in decadence, reportedly using pink cocaine to drug his victims—a substance often laced with the same bath salts John McAfee notoriously used during his wild escapades. Bath salts are infamous for causing erratic and demented behavior. Despite his carefully cultivated persona, Diddy is not a psychopath; he’s a mama’s boy who attended Catholic school and briefly went to college before dropping out. His so-called "gangster" father was nothing more than a low-level heroin dealer who was killed for being a suspected police informant. It’s genuinely baffling how Diddy ever became famous, let alone wealthy.
